To some, Corey Gray may appear unusual. His experimental façade places him in undefined territories, which is exactly where he prefers to be. Gray, a Fashion Communication student at Lasell, is originally from Maine, growing up near Acadia National Park. “I come from a weird dichotomy of culture,” says Gray.
After receiving generous financial aid from Lasell, Gray uprooted from Maine to settle into his single dorm room in Woodland Hall, where he has since stayed comfortably. He is an active member of many on-campus clubs, including a cappella where his gorgeously strong voice can be heard.
For Gray, the choice to pursue fashion was spur of the moment, but it felt right. “I wanted to go into communications or writing or something like that, but I couldn't think about doing that for the rest of my life, it just sounded so dry! Adding fashion gave it a more personal feel because it’s my gig. I live for the fashion,” said Gray.
“Corey is literally the most confident person I have ever met,” says Olivia Martin, a close friend of Gray’s and a Lasell senior. “I’ve observed how he makes a lot of things that don't make sense, but they still work, they have you kind of question it. Even if you don't like it, you still like it on him.”
Gray’s look can really only be defined as customized, using fashion and cosmetics as his playground. “I look at it from very much a styling standpoint, a very visual fantasy. I love the avant-garde,” says Gray. He believes in the impractical, and in dressing for yourself more than others.
In his junior year now, Gray has found his true calling in fashion, yet claims he has not a clue what he’ll do next. “I’m very much a proponent of the philosophy of going into it without that many expectations,” said Gray. “I wanna be whatever the hell I am when I graduate.”
